What Are the Highest-Paying Trades? How to Choose the Right One
Some trades offer strong earnings, but the best choice depends on local opportunities, training access, and the work you want to do. Compare starting pay with experienced pay before choosing a career.
Which trade jobs pay well?
Here are three occupations to compare. This is a selected comparison, not a complete ranking of all trades.
| Occupation | US median annual pay, May 2025 |
|---|---|
| Elevator and escalator installers and repairers | $109,910 |
| Electricians | $63,190 |
| HVAC mechanics and installers | $61,010 |
Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics. Median pay is the middle wage across workers at different experience levels; it is not a beginner salary. Location, industry, and hours worked affect earnings. These wage estimates exclude self-employed workers.
How much do trade apprentices and helpers make?
There is no single starting wage for every trade or location. Look at current employer listings and apprenticeship wage schedules.
Check trade job listings and compare these details:
- Starting hourly wage and expected weekly hours.
- Benefits and required employee costs.
- Overtime, travel, and on-call expectations.
- Training provided and requirements for pay increases.
Ask whether advertised annual earnings include overtime or commission. Compare normal schedules, not just the largest number in an advertisement.
How do I choose a trade with good earning potential?
Choose two or three trades and check:
- Local access: Are employers hiring beginners or sponsors accepting applications?
- Training cost: Can you afford the route without taking on debt you cannot manage?
- Daily work: Are you comfortable with the physical demands, schedule, and environment?
- Advancement: What training and experience lead to more responsibility?
Explore trade careers, then find nearby training options. Contact schools and employers before committing.
Can you make $100,000 a year in the trades?
Yes, some workers do. BLS reports a national median above $100,000 for elevator and escalator installers and repairers. That does not mean beginners start there or that every trade has the same earnings.
Ask what qualified workers earn locally and how they reach that level. Higher annual earnings may involve specialization, additional responsibility, overtime, or travel.
How do I increase my pay over time?
Start with the skills your employer needs. Ask your supervisor what separates your current role from the next level. Complete relevant instruction, practice under supervision, and document your progress.
Learn to produce accurate work, solve problems within your training, communicate clearly, and keep good records. Review progress with your employer and ask about its advancement requirements.
If your goal is business ownership, learn estimating, scheduling, customer service, and financial management as well. Business revenue is not the same as personal income.
Your next steps
Compare three local beginner opportunities where available. Record pay, hours, training, and advancement requirements. Speak with one employer or worker in your preferred trade before choosing a program.
